But it occured to me that at that level and a few levels below keepers never get hit on the pads anyway. So why do they bother with them when they could just use those lightweight ones that short leg fielders wear under their whites.
Habit, or tradition ?

its not for tradition or not for the habit purpose, only reason is for safety purpose they wear the pads..
may be matt prior consider this is not an international match not to follow strictly the rules and regulations .
I'm sure I remember reading a report of Riki Wessels doing this for Northants a few years ago as an experiment, but I can't find any mention of it when I search for the article at the moment.
