Jinxing Hussey's Hundred

I know I am getting slightly ahead of myself, but if Mike Hussey can score another 19 runs tomorrow and get to 100 it will be interesting to see how he celebrates. Will he gesture aggressively towards the press box like under pressure players have done in the past. This is slightly cliched now and not really Hussey's style. I'm tipping a quick burst of emotion with a "YEEEAAAHH" shout and a fist pump before he acknowledges the crowd in a job-not-done-yet fashion and then knuckling back down to the job at hand.

Was he out just now lbw but not given? Looked like it hit both pads and the umpire mistook that for an inside edge? Really annoying they don't seem to have snicko in this series to help the 3rd umpire....apparently Clark DID edge behind yesterday when England referred but the technology in place couldn't deduce that? That's what the Cricinfo close of play interview with Ian Chappell suggested anyway....

Agree completely. Snicko is a far clearer indicator than Hotspot if only one of these two is available, although ideally both should be used in conjunction with each other. As I write this David Lloyd and Michael Holding are discussing this topic, but from the question of only having the option of two unsuccessful referrals. It seems to me unfair for a side to be charged for an unsuccessful referral when the result is sufficiently marginal for the umpire's decision to stand although shown to be incorrect on the basis of the Hawkeye prediction. Surely the purpose of the two referral limit is to prevent totally frivolous referrals, not to penalise borderline ones.

Apparently the reason snicko is not available is because it can't be brought up straight away, apparently they need a few minutes to marry up the sound and the images. With the Clarke one, there was a noise registered on snicko, but to me it seemed to be after the ball had passed the bat. And finally, I didn't see it myself, but apparently yes, Hussey was plumb. There were two noises but it turned out they were both pad.

I hate it when luck comes into things! That's a huge amount of runs Aleem Dar owes England!

It hasn't really changed England's tactics though...they've got to put together really big partnerships like Hussey and Haddin did. Not another innings with several starts for the batsmen, but no really big score.

If they can score 400 the pressure would then be on Australia, and I can't believe Swann will bowl so badly (by his standards) as in the first innings so could be key if they get a decent lead...

Edward, luck is a part of the game. Hussey was lucky first ball he faced the edge didn't carry to slip. Every time a batsman plays and misses it is pure luck that they do not edge it. Or when a shot is mistimed and luckily just clears the infield. Or a top edged hook flies over the keeper.

Agreed! But there's two types of luck - they type where you nick it past the slips or just clear someone going arial, and there's the other type of luck when by the laws of the game you're out, but the umpires don't make the correct decision.

As you know it's the latter that riles me, even when England are the beneficiaries!
