England's provisional 30 man Twenty20 squad

You can view the squad on Cricinfo here.

Marcus Trescothick is in as expected. I'm pleased that Luke Wright has made it, and also pleased that the likes of Saj Mahmood and Ed Joyce haven't. One particularly upset individual is Kabir Ali who has gone public with his disappointment. I can see why he's disappointed but publicly telling the selectors' they should have picked you is a risky career move.

As suspected the 30 man squad is a poor choice of players.....How on earth Cook and Bell can be anywhere near a 100 man squad for this form of the game is staggering. Amazingly Surrey and Leicestershire have made all 4 previous Finals Days of 20-20 and only Schofield of Surrey makes it and Snape and Broad of Leics. I really thought England could win this tournament if they picked the best in county cricket as we have played more of it than any other country. So where is Doshi and Benning and Clarke ? have England learnt nothing about needing BIG 6 hitters ? it is fine if like Australia you already have lots of big hitters in your Test lineup but England do not. Cook and Bell and others are unlikely to be scoring at 9-10 an over. I was thinking about going to Cape Town to watch but having seen this squad the England selection panel can shove it.

I agree with you to an extent Nick. I certainly think Doshi should have been selected, but probably at the expense of Schofield, which doesn't increase your Surrey quota! The problem with focussing on Surrey in particular given they have been so successful in Twenty20, is that they have had Hollioake (in year 1 of Twenty20) and Ramprakash holding them together, and neither are involved with England any more. The other players shouldn't get an England call up on the back of Ramprakash's quality.

For that reason I wouldn't agree about Benning - if he played for another county I doubt he'd be getting the praise he's getting, although plenty of observers seem to agree with you.

On the Cook and Bell thing, I agree with you. I think Cook should be given a decent run in 50 over cricket but Twenty20 cricket is not going to be his forte. And I'm slowly losing patience with Bell in Twenty20 and ODIs - I wonder if he'll hold his place in the ODI side when Bopara is fit again....
