Dubious Decisions

Did anyone notice that Dhoni took the ball in front of the stumps when he stumped Pietersen the other night in the T20 game?

On dubious decisions, it seems to me that the position over LBW decisions is getting more bizarre. Not for the first time this season a batsman was given not out for one that would have missed off and leg and hit middle about half way up. Also, there have been several occasions when Sky commentators complain that a batsman was given not out because it would have clipped the stumps, or so hawkeye tells us. I am not a good enough mathematician to work out how many fractions of one degree this is but it is an incredibly small margin.

My plea is that either the technology should be used to the full or not at all. If none is used then Sky should only be able to show the game in real time, a bit like it used to be all those years ago.

When I've been watching, the Sky commentators have generally agreed that when the ball (according to Hawkeye) is only just nicking the wicket it is correctly given not out. On the rare occasions that the onfield umpire has given the batsman out in such circumstances the commentators (particularly Gower) have usually suggested that the batsman was unlucky.
However I do agree that there have been cases where absolutely plumb LBWs have been given not out: it is of course these errors that the DRS is meant to avoid, but the Indians refused to allow Hawkeye to be used.
Instead they consented to the use of Hotspot, which to me is much less clear and rarely conclusive. I much prefer Snicko, and would be prepared to live with the delay while it builds: over rates are reduced to ridiculously low levels by delays contrived by the players, so a delay caused by a legitimate effort to get a correct decision would be almost a relief.

I think you know my view Grov! Test Hawkeye or Virtual Eye for accuracy scientifically, take into account the maximum error and if the ball is seen to be hitting the stumps by less than the maximum room for error, then it's not out. No umpires call etc - it either is or isn't.

Overall, no player referrals - umpires to use the video as necessary. 3rd umpire should be able to over-rule the umpires in the middle if they've seen a replay before the next ball is bowled. All wickets should be reviewed for no balls or the keeper taking the ball in front of the stumps as standard. If a player is walking off and found to be not out, they get alerted with the crowd by the big screen.

I'd want to know more about timings for snicko. I'd use Hotspot and want snicko but I don't know how long it takes now, or how much they thing the snicko replays have the potential to be sped up.

I'd also assume that low catches were taken unless proven otherwise on video.

Easy! ....ish!
