Has Pietersen resigned?

The news just in on Cricinfo suggests that he has....

Sky first reported this - their story is here but it seems to be devoid of facts!

It's still not reported on the BBC but Cricinfo suggest that both Pietersen and Moores have resigned....

I didn't see that coming. I seem to remember Cricket Burble speculating on Vaughan being captain again by the time the Ashes start.

How about this for a prediction then:

- Pietersen takes his bat and ball home and signs for the full IPL playing for Rajasthan Royals

- Vaughan takes his place on the tour to the West Indies and finds form with the bat

- Vaughan to be captain for the 1st Test against Australia in Cardiff

My thoughts exactly! Though I fear Vaughan's triumphant return belongs purely in fantasy land - however Muttley and I would love to see the Lancastrian at the helm once again to take on the Aussies...

According to the BBC, the ECB were unimpressed with Pietersen issuing them an ultimatum to sack Moores, and so accepted his threat to resign. All a bit futile, since it seems that Moores will be out anyway.

If Vaughan is captain come the Ashes I will be very happy in as much as we will have a better chance of winning, but absolutely gutted because I did consider long and hard putting a bet on Vaughan to captain the Ashes when Pietersen took over and decided not to!

But Strauss will be the hot favourite. Great bloke though he is, I can't help feeling he's a "safe pair of hands" who doesn't offer us an advantage over other captains round the world, and in some cases will not compare well. Vaughan would arguably be the top tactician in the world, offering us an advantage over all, or atleast most, oppositions. That advantage (admittedly with Fletcher supporting in the background - it wasn't all Vaughan) was one of the key factors in the 2005 Ashes win.

I just can't see it happening though, as it would reflect badly on Morris and the rest of the ECB doing such an about turn.

I agree with Ed that Vaughan is the best option and that Pietersen should be left to concentrate on being a player. There is an interesting analogy with Brearley and Botham!

However, I have never really understood how the coach manages to have quite such a say in what should or should not happen. Surely the captain's attributes should include getting the best out of the players and making sure that they are mentally prepared to give 100% for their team?

Should give rise to some reaction!!
