Davies is gay makes front page news....really?

Who cares, who cares? If he wants to go public to tell the world he's gay that's totally up to him, but why is it being covered like it's huge news? One sentence somewhere would be more appropriate. We know the players won't have an issue with it after their naked modelling shoots together and James Anderson's comments when he modelled for a gay magazine.

Maybe it will be the 22nd century before sexual persuasion becomes an irrelevant issue.

You're right that in an ideal world, it wouldn't be news, but in reality, he's possibly the first sportsman to come out before his career has really got going, as opposed to whilst his career's winding down (i.e. Gareth Thomas). So this sort of story is going to keep being news until it's a lot more common, like it or not.
It might turn out to be a positive thing, it sounds like the heavy reporting of Gareth Thomas' coming out has helped people in similar positions, so perhaps front page reports about Steve Davies will have a positive effect too.

Yes, I realise I was a little unrealistic in hoping that one sentence would be enough to report it!

What I find strange is the fact that there should be any sense of surprise. We know there are plenty of gay men playing cricket - whether they're out or not. Any regular cricketer will play with or against many gay cricketers every season.

So Davies is a gay professional cricketer - he's one of many, but he's the only one who's public about it. I hope that as and when he scores hundreds for England he gets as much coverage. And as you say, hopefully this will become a non-issue eventually.

I guess it depends which coverage you read really, but I'd taken most of the surprise to be that a sportsman came out, rather than that he was gay. Anyway, back to the actual cricketing issues...
