Can't win.

So in today's papers Angelo Mathews , or whoever was instructing him, got flack for engineering it so that his partner Dinesh Chandimal got to 100 before their side ran out of target runs. Do you remember how much criticism Atherton got for declaring on Hick on 98* and Thorpe got for not engineering it so that Alex Tudor got to his nightwatchman's 100 ?

Difficult one. The team's overall result should be the primary objective, but certainly in village cricket, I think if a player gets in the 90s and you have the option to declare, it is always tempting to allow them the chance to make a ton, as it's so important for player confidence and team morale. This is especially the case if it's a junior player. If you don't, you could end up with a sulky teenager and an irate parent to deal with. But pros should be pros and do what's right for the team.
